Mission Statement
Our Mission: Water City USA is dedicated to inspiring public stewardship, volunteerism, education and support of clean water concerns in ways that preserve, protect and enhance local rivers, streams, creeks and lakes and adjacent lands in the watershed.- – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – -A well kept secret in Nashville involves the nearly 300 linear miles of streams across Davidson County that are federally classified as impaired. This list has remained virtually unchanged for 8-10 years, even after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sued Nashville for millions of dollars in 2007 over polluted waterways. The entire expanse of the Cumberland River from the Woodland Street Bridge to the Bordeaux Bridge is on this ‘polluted’ list. The Nashville Clean Water Project believes our city deserves a better effort, and certainly better water. We’ve stepped into this conversation as the region’s ‘free agency’ environmental nonprofit, meaning we’re not obligated to a specific body of water, we’re only bound to doing good work. We’re doing it doubly well with a fraction of the staff and budget as other organizations in our space. By offering a full suite of information, advocacy, stewardship and volunteer opportunities, we’re increasing the public’s understanding of our local rivers, streams, creeks, lakes and our interconnected watersheds. Our programs engage the audience most often ignored ? the actual citizenry whose activities, actions and neglect are most responsible for the good or poor conditions of our region’s fresh water. Although focused on Middle Tennessee, our work benefits the environment and living organisms, including humans, that depend on clean water for hundreds of miles downstream? all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
